European and UNESCO Global Geoparks

The Geopark Swabian Alb is one of 6 European and Global Geoparks in Germany. All Geoparks work together in a network to preserve and perpetuate the geological heritage of their regions. Membership of the European Geoparks network which has been in existence since 2000 automatically involves membership of the Global Geopark network with 140 members in 39 countries are part of the UNESCo since 2015. At the moment 74 Geoparks from 24 European countries are members of the European Geoparks Network.

UNESCO defines three overall objectives for a Geopark: in addition to preserving the environment, action should be taken towards achieving sustained economic development and promoting better general education in the Earth sciences.

The six German UNESCO Global Geoparks are unified in the "Forum of UNESCO Global Geoparks in Germany.
